Established in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained active.
